The Gift of Generosity: Giving More Than Just Things
What is the gift of Generosity? Is it really giving more than just things?
Generosity is the 11th gift of your 12 gifts in 12 days - Your Blueprint for a Meaningful Life. Unfortunately, when you hear the word generosity, most of us picture handing over beautifully wrapped gifts or writing checks with lots of zeros. (And don’t get me wrong—there’s nothing wrong with that kind of giving… because I like money just as much as you do ).
But Generosity, at its core, is about so much more than the tangible stuff.
Why Do You Need To Be Generous?
Now, you might be wondering, Why do I need to be Generous? Isn’t it just about helping others? Sure, Generosity blesses the people around you, but it also transforms you.
It strengthens your relationships, deepens your understanding of others, and fills your life with a sense of purpose. It’s the antidote to selfishness and the secret ingredient to a more connected, fulfilling life.
My Story of Sharing Generosity
Join me on journey back to my college days… one of my classmates was from India, and she was struggling with her English class. I could see her frustration building day after day. So, I decided to help her out.
Now, was I some expert? Nope. I was navigating my own English mishaps, thank you very much (you know that whole British versus American English thing). But what I did have was a little time, a lot of patience (if you can believe that one), and an understanding of what it feels like to struggle.
We met up regularly to study. I walked her through the lessons as best I could, and we laughed—a lot—at some of the language blunders we stumbled across. And when she passed that class? The look on her face was everything. Pure joy.
I’ll never forget that moment.
What I didn’t realize at the time was that I got something out of it, too. That act of Generosity filled me up in ways I didn’t expect. It reminded me that Generosity isn’t about having more to give—it’s about giving what you have.
That, my friend, is Generosity.
How Can You Share Generously?
Here are three simple ways to carry this gift with you all year long:
1. Share Your Time -Sometimes, the best gift you can give someone is your presence. Call up a friend who’s struggling and just listen. Volunteer for a cause that matters to you. Your time is precious, and when you share it, you make others feel seen and valued.
2. Offer Encouragement – A kind word can go a long way. Write a heartfelt note, send a thoughtful text, or simply tell someone how much they mean to you. Encouragement costs nothing… but can change everything.
3. Give with Intention – Generosity isn’t about the size of the gift; it’s about the heart behind it. Think about the unique ways you can share what you have. Maybe it’s offering mentorship to someone just starting out, or giving your undivided attention to your family at the end of a long day.
Let’s Wrap This Up
Generosity isn’t about how much you have—it’s about how much you care. It’s the little moments where you show up, give of yourself, and pour love into others. And the beautiful thing? When you give from a place of love, you’ll find that your own heart feels fuller, too.
So today, take a moment to think: How can I be Generous? Start small. Start where you are. But start!
I’m cheering 📣 for you!
