Organize Your Steps: The 2nd Step to Achieving Your Goals 🎯

When it comes to achieving your goals, there’s a secret sauce that often gets overlooked: organizing your steps, which is the second step to achieving your goals.

What Can Baking Teach You About Goals

Imagine this—you’re about to bake the most decadent chocolate cake ever. You’ve got all the ingredients laid out: cocoa powder, sugar, eggs, flour, and that secret splash of vanilla. But instead of following the recipe step by step, you just toss everything into the oven and hope for the best. What do you get? A mess.

The same principle applies to your goals.

Without a clear, organized plan, even the best intentions can end up as a hot mess. That’s where the “O” in the SOAR Framework comes into play: Organize Your Steps.

People who set specific actionable steps are far more likely to achieve their goals.

The Power of Organizing Your Action Steps

Breaking down your big goal into smaller, actionable tasks is like following a recipe for success. Gallup research backs this up: people who set specific, actionable steps are far more likely to achieve their goals. Why? Because the big, hairy audacious goal that seems insurmountable suddenly becomes manageable—bite-sized pieces that are easier to chew and digest.

Take Janet, for example. One of my coaching clients, she wanted to snag a leadership position at her company but felt completely overwhelmed. So, we organized her steps:

  1. Improve her leadership skills through a mentorship program.

  2. Build her network by attending targeted industry events.

  3. Craft a personalized resume and LinkedIn profile that aligned with her aspirations.

Each step built on the last, like stacking sturdy bricks to create a strong foundation. Before long, Janet wasn’t just in the running for the position—she got the job. That’s the magic of organizing your steps.

Step #2 - Organize Your Steps

Achieving what you want in life is not easy… but it is worth it.

Turning a 90,000-Membership Deficit Around

The power of organizing your steps to achieve your goals is a lesson that really hit home for me early in my career. While working for a large association, I got tagged to lead a membership retention task-force. (task-force is a fancy word for committee). 😀

The problem? Our membership was down by 90,000—yes, you read that right. Ninety thousand members.

I’ll be honest. My first thought was, “This is either going to be a career-making opportunity or a career-limiting disaster.” Thankfully, it turned out to be the former. But it wasn’t luck—it was all about organizing our steps.

By breaking the goal (vision) into clear steps and assigning accountability, the impossible started to feel achievable. And guess what? Not only did we recover the 90,000-member deficit, but we also exceeded our growth targets. That’s the power of organizing your steps.

The SOAR Framework: Step Two – Organize Your Steps

Here are three practical ways you can organize your steps to achieve your goals:

1.  Define Clear Milestones -Break down your goal into smaller, tangible checkpoints. Milestones give you clarity and direction, ensuring you can celebrate progress along the way.

Prioritize Tasks by Impact -Rank the tasks you need to complete in order of importance or impact. Focus on what will move the needle the most toward your goal.

3 Create a Timeline with Deadlines -Assign specific deadlines to each task and milestone. Break larger tasks into smaller steps and decide when each one will be completed. A realistic timeline helps you avoid overwhelm and ensures steady progress.

Why Small Steps Lead to Big Wins

When you break your goal into smaller tasks, something magical happens. Each small win gives you a boost of confidence and momentum to tackle the next step.

It’s like climbing a mountain—you don’t focus on the peak the whole time. Instead, you concentrate on the next handhold or foothold, and before you know it, you’re at the summit.

One of my favorite quotes sums this up perfectly: “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” The same applies to your goals. By taking one step at a time, even the biggest challenges become manageable.

Remember, you don’t have to do this alone. If you’re feeling stuck or overwhelmed by your goals, it’s time to take action.
